The Whys and Hows of Telehealth

Why Telehealth

During these challenging times, I have decided to meet with clients solely via video sessions/telehealth for your safety and mine, as well as those we care about. I realize for many people who are already experiencing increased isolation and loneliness this may feel challenging. I do however encourage you to try it!

Suggestions for Before and After

Take a few minutes before and after each session to focus on entering therapy and likewise re-entering your day. For some, this may mean changing clothes, listening to a song (as if you are commuting), making a phone call, or writing a brief journal entry. Finding a way to separate your time in therapy from the rest of your day is important and may take some practice.

Advantages

Telehealth offers some new advantages including more flexibility for scheduling as travel time is no longer an issue. No more nerves as you sit in waiting rooms. You can choose where you are most comfortable to have your sessions. You can more easily fit therapy into your daily schedule before work, during lunch, on off-hours etc.

Considerations for Session Time

Most importantly you want to ensure you have a private location for session time. Ideally you will have a quiet location with limited distractions. You will want a comfortable chair or place to sit and of course you will need access to the video an audio technology needed to access your session.

Challenges

There are some challenges that exist when not meeting face to face. Some body language and voice intonations may be harder to pick up on. It can be hard to balance your focus and emotions if you feel that therapy is seeping into your day-to-day life. Therapy in your home or workday can feel invasive if you do not pay attention to this change.
